Escaping to the Outer Space 50" x50" Oil on Canvas
Escaping to the Outer Space is Huang’s most recently completed work. Mental health issues have been an recurring theme in Huang’s surrealist paintings, but with Escaping to the Outer Space, Huang tried to examine the topic with a bolder and rawer approach, opting for fantastical motifs, a flamboyant palette and borderline primal brushstrokes for the heavy topic of depression, challenging the public imagination of what “being depressed” may look like in its visual form. The piece marked Huang’s transition into a new phase of experiments, where she reconsiders what each color and brushstroke communicates, and redefines herself as an artist with a more clarified vision.
